Casa-blanca: a Large Non-imaging Cerenkov Detector at Casa-mia
نویسندگان
چکیده
The lateral distribution of Cerenkov light at ground level records important information on the development of the air shower which produces it. We have constructed a Broad Lateral Non-imaging Cerenkov Array (BLANCA) to measure this lateral distribution at the CASA-MIA air shower detector in Dugway, Utah. Together, the arrays can sample the lateral distributions of electrons, muons, and Cerenkov light, at many well-measured distances from the shower core. We describe the design and calibration of the CASA-BLANCA experiment and its ability to address the composition of primary cosmic rays between 3×1014 and 3×1016 eV.

Measuring the Cosmic Ray Composition at the Knee with BLANCA
BLANCA is a new, large non-imaging Cerenkov detector located at the CASA-MIA experiment it Dugway, Utah. Using 144 individual Cerenkov detectors, BLANCA covers an area of approximately 0.2 km and has an energy threshold of 300 TeV. The lateral density function (LDF) of the Cerenkov light in air showers is measured. Since the LDF depends on the primary particle species, a change in composition a...
متن کاملA Measurement of the Cosmic Ray Spectrum and Composition at the Knee
The energy spectrum and primary composition of cosmic rays with energy between 3 × 1014 and 3 × 1016 eV have been studied using the CASA-BLANCA detector. CASA consisted of 957 surface scintillation stations; BLANCA consisted of 144 angle-integrating Cherenkov light detectors located at the same site. CASA measured the charged particle distribution of air showers, while BLANCA measured the later...
متن کاملRECENT RESULTS FROM THE CASA-MIA EXPERIMENT The Utah-Michigan-Chicago Collaboration
Results from the CASA-MIA cosmic ray experiment are presented. I discuss the apparatus and its performance, including new results on the identification of the shadows of the sun and moon used to determine the angular resolution. Limits on the emission of 100 TeV v-rays from the Crab Nebula are well below extrapolations from TeV observations. A search for diffuse "),-rays from the Galactic plane...
متن کاملDetection of the Rf Pulse Associated with Cosmic Ray Air Showers
A project to detect the radio-frequency pulse associated with extensive air showers of cosmic rays is described briefly. Prototype work is being performed at the CASA/MIA array in Utah, with the intention of designing equipment that can be used in conjunction with the Auger Giant Array proposal.
متن کاملAppendix 5 . the Casa Length Structured Stock Assessment
The stock assessment model described here is based on Sullivan et al.’s (1990) CASA model. CASA is entirely length-based with population dynamic calculations in terms of the number of individuals in each length group during each year. Age is largely irrelevant in model calculations. Unlike many other length-based stock assessment approaches, CASA is a dynamic, non-equilibrium model based on a f...
